Netflix’s ‘Maid’ Has a Young Mother Fighting for Her Life

TRIGGER WARNING.

Maid was released on Netflix on October 1, 2021. The limited series contains 10 episodes. The series follows a young mother, Alex (Margaret Qualley), fleeing her emotionally abusive boyfriend (Nick Robinson), to build a better life for their daughter, Maddy (Rylea Nevaeh Whittet). I binged the entire series in 3 days which may seem like a long time for some of you but for me, I liked spreading it out because I always feel sad when I binge a good show because I always end up wanting more. Anyways, here are my thoughts on Netflix’s newest limited series.

While the series is a drama, it felt so realistic. It’s such an important story that shed a light on domestic violence, alcoholism, poverty, mental health, addiction, and the reality of being a single mother.

The performances were nothing short of absolute brilliance. I smell an Emmy for Margaret Qualley. Alex is her breakout role. The way she embodied this role just by using mannerisms and facial expressions is mind-blowing to me. Andie MacDowell plays Paula, Alex’s mom. She was absolutely stellar in this. This is my favorite performance from her so far in her career. She played Paula with so much respect and grace.

The dynamic between Alex and Paula is so intricate and heartbreakingly beautiful. It may be because MacDowell and Qualley are real-life mother and daughter. Their chemistry was so evident you could feel it coming off the small screen.

Nick Robinson was incredible in this as well. I never thought I would despise a character that he plays but man I couldn’t stand Sean. He drove me absolutely crazy throughout the entire series. Despite this, Sean is an interesting character with so much depth and lots of layers to peel away.

The writing was so good. It felt so natural and unscripted. The character development in this is insane. The amount of character development Alex goes through in just 10 episodes is mind-blowing to me.

I was so impressed by this show. I knew it was going to be good just by watching the very first trailer.

If this wasn’t a limited series and we were given the opportunity for another season, I would love that. I would love to know how Alex is doing in school and what her and Maddy are up to. Same with Paula and Sean. Although, the way the series closed was satisfying in its own right. I feel like they’re really isn’t a need for another season.

If you haven’t watched this limited series yet, what are you waiting for? Go watch it right now.
