Mare of Easttown was released on April 18, 2021 on HBO Max. The limited series follows Mare Sheehan, a detective who investigates a brutal murder while trying to keep her life from falling to pieces. The series includes 7 episodes and brings viewers along for the ride.

You know Kate Winslet from Titanic and The Holiday but she takes on an entirely different role in this limited series. Winslet portrays Mare Sheehan. She is a detective with a small-town police department in Pennsylvania who investigates the murder of a teenage mother while battling personal troubles. Sheehan is known as Lady Hawk for a shot she made in basketball game 25 years prior. She has been unable to solve the case for a missing girl for a year.

Winslet is British but takes on Pennsylvania accent for this role. It can be hard to believe at times because she does such an incredible job at molding into the roles she plays and Mare is no exception. Mare Sheehan is a character who has many layers and we see her develop further as the series progresses.

In 2019, creator Brad Inglesby was reported to write all the episodes. Kate Winslet was announced that she was cast in the show. In 2020, Craig Zobel was announced as the director and serve as an executive producer.

Filming began in the fall of 2019 in suburban Philadelphia. Production was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic but filming resumed in September of 2020.

The story is set in a fictionalized version of Easttown Township, Pennsylvania. There were many conversations whether to use the “Delco” accent, a version of the Philadelphia accent common in Delaware County. Although the accent is particularly challenging to learn, Winslet insisted that it should be used because it would emphasize authenticity within the story.

The series received critical acclaim from critics and currently sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series has an 8.6/10 rating on IMDb. Most critics praised Winslet’s performance as Mare Sheehan. Each episode was views by more than 1 million viewers.

If you love mystery and crime, this limited series is for you. As a fan of mystery and crime myself, this show definitely delivered. Each episode drew me in even more and the story gets darker, intense, and twisted. Each character has multiple layers and harbors secrets that will shock you. You’ll fall in love with Detective Colin Zabel (Evan Peters), trust me.

Mare of Easttown takes you along for the ride. It keeps you guessing which keeps the viewer’s interest.

If you haven’t watched the show yet, I highly recommend you do so.
