Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me was released on Apple TV Plus on November 4, 2022. The film documents singer and actress Selena Gomez’s mental health journey over a span of 6 years. I wanted to share my thoughts on the documentary with all of you. Let’s get into this.
I want to start by giving you my general thoughts on the film. It was vulnerable, emotional, and stunning.
I knew that I had to watch this documentary when Selena posted a sneak peek of it on her Instagram. I grew up watching her on Wizards of Waverly Place on Disney Channel like most of you. She was a pretty big part of my childhood.
I’m going to move onto getting more into the film’s primary purpose. It’s clear that Selena wants this documentary to inspire her fans and let them know that they have voice and they shouldn’t be afraid to use it.
The editing was so beautiful. Alek Keshishian did a wonderful job directing this. You could tell how personal the story is to Selena and how the artistic aspects amplify the message.
There were many times when I cried because I related to her journey. I’ve had anxiety my entire life but it wasn’t until middle school when it all came to a head. I resonated with the following quote that was featured at the end of the documentary: “I’m at peace. I’m angry. I’m sad, I’m confident. I’m full of doubt. I’m a work in progress. I’m enough. I am Selena.” I found this quote enlightening in a way because I never know how to explain how I feel when I get anxiety and panic attacks. This quote is poetic and explains how it feels to struggle with your mind.
Mental health can be a difficult topic to talk about because it can be considered as taboo. I love how passionate Selena is about it and I appreciate that she wants to spark important conversations about the issue.
