Glass Onion: A Knives Mystery was released in theaters on November 23, 2022 and on Netflix on December 23, 2022. The sequel to Knives Out follows detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he solves a new case that involves an eccentric group of people. I watched the film recently and wanted to share my thoughts with all of you. Let’s get into this.
I’m going to start with the performances given by the ensemble cast.
Daniel Craig reprises his role as detective Benoit Blanc. He portrays Blanc so effortlessly. He delivers each line of dialogue flawlessly.
Janelle Monáe steals the show. She portrays Andi Brand, Miles’ (Edward Norton) ex-business partner. She plays a huge role in the twist that I won’t give away. I will say that she is incredible in this film.
Kathryn Hahn portrays Governor Claire Debella of Connecticut. Hahn delivers one of the most unique performances to date during her career. Most of roles are comedic as is this one but Claire’s sole purpose isn’t to provide comedic relief. It’s just a plus.
Leslie Odom Jr. portrays Lionel Touissant, the head scientist for Miles’ company. He brought calm to the chaos when he was on screen. I would’ve liked to have seen more of Lionel.
Kate Hudson portrays Birdie Jay, a former supermodel turned fashion designer. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Hudson in a role like this one. Birdie Jay comes off as selfish but that’s not the full story. She’s absolutely magnificent in this film and stole the show for me just like Monáe did.
Dave Bautista portrays Duke Cody, a Twitch streamer. I’m so used to seeing him covered in makeup all over his body as Drax in the MCU. He tends to portray bruiting characters that exude major testosterone like Duke. He was the perfect actor to bring this role to life on the big screen.
Jessica Henwick portrays Birdie’s assistant, Peg. I wish we got to see more of Peg. I feel that we didn’t see her character develop or grow enough.
Madelyn Cline portrays Whiskey, Duke’s girlfriend. I was so excited when I heard that Cline was cast in this. I love her as Sarah Cameron in Outer Banks so I was curious to see her in a different role. Whiskey is the typical kind of girl who doesn’t have much of a personality. I wish cline played a bigger role in the film though.
Now, I want to talk about all the creative aspects.
The writing is so well done. it’s challenging to execute a film like this that that solely relies on mystery. The mystery genre can tend to be predictable and simplistic but this film stays away from those aspects for the most part.
The cinematography is stunning and constantly filled my screen with beautiful moving images of Greece.
The production design is immaculate. The designers truly put their hearts and souls into every tiny detail.
I’m very impressed with this film. It’s just as good as the original. It’s entertaining, thrilling, and has great moments of humor.
I’m excited to see what the third installment will be about and the faces we could see in it.
