GUTS is Olivia Rodrigo’s sophomore album. The album was released on September 8, 2023. Rodrigo announced the release of her sophomore album on June 26, 2023 via her Instagram account.

GUTS combines pop, rock, and alternative music. Rodrigo’s sophomore album is an elevated version of her debut album, SOUR. Both albums are rooted in teenage angst, but GUTS in particular explores the theme in a more mature way. Many critics have praised the album for its witty lyrics and complexity as well as the overall aesthetic and energy. The album consists of 12 tracks and was produced by Dan Nigro. Rodrigo has writing credits for all 12 songs.

The third track, vampire, was released as the lead single from the album on June 30, 2023. The song combines elements of pop and rock music. Vampire starts out as a piano ballad and eventually transforms into a pop-rock wonder combining vocal runs and percussion together. It tells the story of how a woman dated a man who was years older than her and how he exploited her.

The second track, bad idea right?, was released as the second single from the album on August 11, 2023. The song combines elements of pop and rock. Its sound is much different than vampire, meaning it’s more playful.

The eighth track, get him back!, is the third single from the album and was released on September 15, 2023. It tells the story of Rodrigo who’s attempting to exact revenge against her ex while also wanting to reconcile with him at the same time. The song combines elements of pop, rock, and rap music.

GUTS is a solid follow-up to Rodrigo’s debut that solidifies her place as an artist in the music industry. Similar to Gracie Abrams, she’s able to take whatever she’s feeling and her experiences and turn them into songs we can relate to. This album highlights Rodrigo’s songwriting capabilities along with her vocal range.

I’d have to say my favorite songs from the album are all-american bitch, pretty isn’t pretty, love is embarrassing, logical, and the grudge. The first 3 songs are rooted in pop-punk vibes while the last two are purely ballads, showcasing Rodrigo’s ability to deliver a song that packs an emotional punch.

I’m anxiously waiting to see what Olivia Rodrigo will deliver in her third studio album.
