There’s a hundred and four days of summer vacation. ‘Til school comes along just to end it. So the annual problem of our generation is finding a good way to spend it. Like maybe celebrating 15 years of Phineas and Ferb possibly? Please tell me you sang along. I hope you did. Phineas and Ferb officially premiered on Disney Channel on February 1, 2008. Today, I want to dive into the impact the show has had on pop culture and how it set a precedent for future animated TV shows on Disney Channel.
Let’s Throw It Back
Phineas and Ferb ran for four seasons in total from 2007 to 2015. The series follows the summer adventures of brothers Phineas (Vincent Martella) and Ferb (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) as they embark on a new project everyday which annoys their older sister Candace (Ashley Tisdale). Meanwhile, the boys’ pet platypus, Perry (Dee Bradley Baker), goes off on secret agent missions as Agent P to defeat Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz (Dan Povenmire), a mad scientist who wants to take over the Tri-State area.
I will always say that the first season is the best one because it’s what started it all and it contains some of the best episodes of the show. The first episode is Rollercoaster/Candace Loses Her Head. This is the episode that truly started it all. Rollercoaster is when we first meet Phineas and Ferb. The brothers build a rollercoaster in their backyard and Candace tries to bust them in the process.
In Candace Loses Her Head, the Flynn-Fletcher family heads up to Mount Rushmore. Phineas and Ferb decide to surprise Candace for her birthday by putting her head on Mount Rushmore.
What’s even more amazing is that 10.8 million people watched the pilot following the premiere of High School Musical 2.
I’m not going to go into every episode in season 1 because we’d be here for awhile. Instead, I’m just going to list a few of my favorite episodes from the first season. Here they are: Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror!, S’Winter, Flop Starz, It’s About Time, Toy to the World, Mom’s Birthday, Run Away Runway, and Dude, We’re Getting the Band Back Together!
While I am a huge Phineas and Ferb fan, I definitely haven’t watched every single episode. I was really into the first two seasons and I started growing out of Disney Channel.
The series spawned two movies titled Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension in 2011 and Candace Against the Universe in 2020, two specials titled Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars and Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, and a crossover show titled Milo Murphy’s Law.
Impact on Pop Culture and Setting a Precedent
Phineas and Ferb made a big impact on pop culture. The music is what makes this show stand out amongst other animated series on Disney Channel. A song started appearing in every episode starting with Flop Starz. Supposedly, Disney’s executives loved Gitchee, Gitchee Goo so much that they wanted songs to appear in every episode. The creators Jeff “Swampy” Marsh and Dan Povenmire wrote the songs and composer Danny Jacob created the melodies.
You know what’s even more exciting? Disney revived Phineas and Ferb for two seasons consisting of 20 episodes each. Our favorite brothers are coming back. I’m curious to see what the stories are going to be. I do wish that we got to see them in high school or college. We can’t be kids forever. I know most of us wish we could.
The animated series has set a precedent for what future shows could be on the network. Creator Dan Povenmire has another show titled Hamster & Gretel which is currently airing on Disney Channel with Michael Cimino and Joey King providing their voice talents.
Time to Wrap It Up
It’s hard to believe that this show is 15-years-old. I still rewatch it now as an adult. It’s interesting to rewatch the shows I loved and grew up with because you notice things that you don’t notice when you’re a kid.
Who’s your favorite character from Phineas and Ferb? DM me on Instagram. Mine is Candace.
That’s all for now, folks. Thank you so much for reading!
