Hidden Figures was released in theaters in 2016. This biographical drama follows a trio of female African American mathematicians who served a vital role in the launch of astronaut John Glenn. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, and Mahersala Ali. After I watched Hidden Figures, I wanted to review it on here. Here are my thoughts.
The acting is this film is superb. The performances that resonated the most with me are Henson, Spencer, and Monáe. They were all spectacular. They brought so much personality, poise, and authenticity to their roles and the film in its entirety.
The supporting cast provided great performances that complemented but didn’t take away from the main 3 women.
The story is so inspiring and motivating. This film clearly demonstrates the power of film and what film can do to spread an important message and make an impact.
I’m not going to lie to you and I say that I didn’t cry many times. It was truly emotional and felt so raw. This makes sense as the film is based on a true story.
The pacing was great and made the film even more enjoyable to watch. The cinematography is so pretty with the colors and textures piercing through the big screen.
Hidden Figures received critical acclaim for its performances, cinematography, writing, narrative, and direction. Some did mention how it featured a white savior narrative. Along with its critical success, it make big bucks at the box office. It made $236 million against a $25 million budget.
The film was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture and it won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
This is a film that everybody should see. It has such an important message of following your own path and not letting anybody get in the way of following your dreams and passions.
It’s such a powerful film for women to watch. It makes you feel like you can do anything. You can do anything you put your mind to. Don’t ever doubt yourself.
