SPOILERS AHEAD.
Don’t Look Up began a limited release in theaters on December 10, 2021 and was released on Netflix on December 24, 2021. The film’s premise follows two astronomers, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) who go on a media spree to warn the public about a large comet hurdling towards Earth that will end life as they know it. Along with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, the films stars Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Ariana Grande, Mark Rylance, Kid Cudi, Melanie Lynskey, and more.
When the film was first announced, I was so excited because of the ensemble cast. When the trailer was released, I knew it was going to be off-the-wall and a bit weird. Let me tell you this is one of the worst films I’ve seen in 2021.
I’m really disappointed because I was excited for the cast and the story sounded interesting.
Adam McKay’s direction was nonexistent. The editing is horrendous. It’s choppy. The constant zoom-ins on the hands, arms, and faces of the characters annoyed me. Same with the scenes that kept getting cut before a character could even finish their line.
The fact that this film had a $75 million budget tells me it was just to get the actors on board.
The acting wasn’t bad. I think that’s the only thing that kept me watching. The material just wasn’t good. The writing was so inconsistent.
Oh and it was so draggy. Why was it so long? It could’ve been better if it was sufficiently cut and the writing was better as well as the editing.
The second half of them got kind of interesting.
That Chris Evans cameo saved the entire film for me.
Don’t Look Up is available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
